Testing out MyAvatars

I’ve always wished that more people would comment on this site, about their opinions, experiences, general impressions of the plugins/themes/updates that get posted, but alas, I’ve not had much luck. I’m installing Napolux’s MyAvatars plugin, which uses your MyBlogLog avatar in the comments. Not that I expect that to create a mad rush to start commenting, however it’s always nice to have something visual to put with a commenter. I may have to add one of those widgets as well, as it’s kinda funny to click a link to a site, and all of a sudden see yourself as a recent visitor. What are your feelings on those?

on the one hand, it’s a little disturbing, but you have to keep in mind that in order for a person’s avatar to show up, they have to have signed up and uploaded an avatar already. i don’t think the target audience is a bunch of wallflowers.

Agreed. This version of the plugin seems to have the option to also use gravatars, though lately gravatars has had issues, so I wasn’t in a hurry to test that.

I see some spammy avatars already, so I’m not as fond of it as I was this morning :(

testing again with some advice from the plugin author

OK, so you have to set your site’s URL in your admin’s profile page for you to show up while logged in.

see, i take spammy avatars as a sign of an avatar service that’s got some traction. gravatars, with their pseudo-censorship (like their pseudo authentication) is just horribly naive, and uninteresting to most users.

myavatars has the range of avatars that an uncensored forum has: most people have avatars of their favorite bands, anime characters, or porn stars. like that one guy in the corner yelling “i like angelina jolie!!!1″. gravatars is just to … sanitary. group-think. they’re all either a personal photo or a personal logo. it just doesn’t have the reach.

anyway, interesting note about the admin user, thanks.
