Yet Another Theme Contest Idea
July 3rd, 2006
Yeah, Yeah, I’ve heard it all before. However, I think this idea is just different enough that even the most cynical WP user will find it interesting. We all have seen the Classic theme gathering dust in the corner of our install, or worse, it’s been deleted. However, I find it intriguing, and am offering up the idea of a contest in which ONLY the style sheet is redone. No code on any of the template’s change. I know this was done in earlier versions of WP, and with the release of 1.5 and Kubrick, it all became passe, however I’d like to revive it, and be able to offer up for download the new styles that show up. I think that would give new users even more to choose from, not to mention, it gives everyone a chance to participate, as you don’t have to be a coding genius to compete with the stellarly talented designers out there who know the WP code like the back side of their hand.
So, with that said, I have at least one potential sponsor lined up, if there’s enough interest, and would attempt to line up a couple more if there’s really enough interest. As of today, my stats are saying there’s at least 84 of you reading this feed, so perhaps a few of you could chime in on your feelings on such. Perhaps I don’t know that Classic is going to be dumped in a future release, and I’m wasting my time. All of which I’d love to hear. Please, then, chime in, just this once, and let me know if there’s interest in such a contest, and if it’s a worthy contribution to the community.
I will say I haven’t finalized the details, but adding graphic elements would be accepted, the only real rule I’d stick by is the no changing of the code in the templates. Any other suggestions welcomed.

I would surely be interested - and let me know if I can offer my services up as a prize (of course, I wouldn’t enter the competition in that case) or something - maybe a two hour SEO/Internet Marketing consultation, or something of that sort?
it seems it’s time of Wp theme contests again
I’d like to take part…
Good idea! We would be glad to support.
wouldn’t it be better to do stylesheets for k2, fauna, or some other ‘modernized’ theme?
First, I’ve responded to the bold assertion that I’m doing this with some sort of “pagerank chasing” boost in mind. Not my goal, in the least.
Regarding the question of style sheets for “modernized” themes, well, sure that would be one thing. But my thinking is that classic is there, in every install. Why not have some modern approaches to style, to give new users an idea of what can be done, before tackling such code heavy and complicated themes like K2 or fauna. I’m not trying to change the world, or set it on fire, it’s simply an idea that I had, that I put out there. Nothing was set in stone. Depending on the amount interest, the prize might be an ipod nano, or some hosting. Also, as I stated in the original post, it gives those users who have taught themselves enough CSS to get in trouble to participate, as they don’t have to be a coding pro to write a theme from scratch.
What ever happened to doing things for fun, with just a little incentive. Why does everything have to be about major prizes, and lifetime commitments to a contest?
wait, so the goal of your competition is to educate end users, to prompt them to try to make their own customizations? CSS is the same whether you’re talking about classic or K2. and as wank said, this is a full time job you’re taking on, you should have a better plan before announcing.
and as far as being in every install? i think we can hold our breath safely expecting that ‘honor’ to be bestowed on k2 in the near future.
the other reason i suggested k2 and fauna is that they both have built in style-switchers.
It’s a great idea. Chances are more minimalistic themes will occur.
I’d pick changing classic over Kubrick any day. Way easier to modify, especially if classic were fixed (re: the sidebar). It didn’t take me long to fix classic for myself, and start using that as a template for a few different styles.
